They parked next to each other at Claribel’s, her yard a well-kept English garden compared to her great-grandson’s. Birdy tapped on the door, and the two of them waited. Mat heard voices and then the sound of heavy footsteps before the door was opened.

Mat was damn glad Birdy had come along, because he was momentarily speechless. He had not expected Shay Delacombe to answer the door.

“Mr. Delacombe, Sheriff Dempsey and I are here to ask your grandmother a few questions. Is Claribel available?”

Shay Delacombe was an attractive man, medium height, with the characteristic Delacombe ice-blue eyes and dark hair. The suit he wore didn’t hide his lean athletic body, it accentuated it. And Shay knew it. A slight smirk flitted across his lips.

Shay’s cool gaze flicked from Birdy to Mat. “Sheriff. Deputy. Come inside and have a seat. I’ll check with Claribel.”

After a quiet discussion with his great-aunt, Shay returned and led them into the kitchen. Much like Mat’s mother’s kitchen, it was a spacious room with a large table against one pale yellow wall and a door leading to the backyard. A window above the table looked out over the back of the property, and somewhere a few miles or so out was the Wainwright sheep pasture.

“Do you ever get sheep wandering over this way?” Mat asked.

“Sheep? What kind of fool question is that?” Claribel retorted.

“Just curious.”

“Sit down and ask me those questions. Shay and I have things to take care of.”

Birdy asked, “Claribel, did you know if Chastity was seeing anyone? Did she have a boyfriend or girlfriend?”

Claribel’s lips straightened into a thin line. Mat thought she looked more careworn than she had a week earlier. Chastity’s death had affected her more than she was willing to admit. As much as Mat disliked and distrusted Shay, he was glad the man had come to be with his great-aunt during this time.

“No, no, I have no idea if Chastity was seeing anyone—man or woman. As far as I know, she spent her time at the yoga center. We’d had an argument. She asked for money to start her own studio, and I… well, I said no.”

“And now I wish I hadn’t” was left unsaid but heard by them all.

Mat squashed down irritation that Claribel hadn’t told them this earlier. “When was this? When did she come to you?”

“Before she moved off Martin’s property.”

Claribel looked over at her great-nephew. Shay hadn’t sat down with them; instead he was leaning against the kitchen counter listening to their questions.

“Did she talk to you, Shay?”

Shay shook his head. “Chastity and I weren’t close enough in age.”

“So you wouldn’t know if she’d been seeing anyone?”

“No, I wouldn’t know. Why are you asking, have you found something out?”

“Possibly,” Mat replied. “She was seen on the ferry talking to someone. We’d like to find that person.”

“So would I.” Shay straightened from the counter. “Claribel’s worn out. I’ll walk you to the door.”

Outside, Shay stopped them before they descended the stairs.

“Do you have anything?” he asked.

Mat shrugged. “This unknown person is the best lead so far, but we don’t have a great description.
